RIP Netscape Navigator

The pioneer behind browsing the web is finally calling it a day according to AOL.

Netscape Navigator, the world’s first commercial Web browser and the starting point of the Internet boom, will be pulled off life support Feb. 1 after a 13-year run.

Its current caretakers, Time Warner’s AOL, decided to end further development and technical support to focus on developing the company as an advertising business. Netscape’s use dwindled with Microsoft’s entry into the browser business in the 1990s, and Netscape all but faded away after the birth of its open-source cousin, Firefox.

Here is to the legacy of the Navigator known only as Netscape. (1995-2008)

Happy 10th Birthday , Yahoo Mail!

Today marked the 10th Anniversary for Yahoo Mail! Back in its inception it was known as Rocket Mail back in 1997 with a whopping 3MB of space. This past March 07 Yahoo decided to throw out the size limitations and let users absorbed as much mail as one wants. One interesting note from the Official Yahoo Blog:

It’s funny to reflect that when Rocketmail first started, many users chose to list their email addresses in a public directory because they wanted everyone to know how to contact them. Fast-forward to a world where we invest a huge amount of time and diligence protecting our users from spam (now estimated to represent more than 70% of all email) and phishing attacks.
